Meclizine

Meclizine is an antihistamine and anticholinergic that's used to treat nausea and vomiting. It's often prescribed for patients that suffer from severe motion sickness.

Also Known As:

Antivert, Bonine, D-Vert, Dramamine II, Medivert, Driminate II, Meclicot, Ru-Vert-M and Meni-D. These are all brand names. Meclizine is sold under its own name in its generic form.

Active Ingredients:

Meclizine-Meclizine acts as an antihistamine to subdue allergic reactions and an anticholinergic designed to block a chemical messenger to the brain, reducing nausea and vomiting.

What It Does:

Meclizine is prescribed for patients suffering from nausea, vomiting and dizziness as a result of motion sickness. Patients taking Meclizine to treat motion sickness will generally carry it with them and take it on an as-needed (PNR) basis. It is also used to treat the vertigo associated with inner ear infections and other conditions as indicated by a physician.

Meclizine should be taken with a full glass of water approximately one hour before travel to treat motion sickness. Patients with vertigo may take Meclizine multiple times a day as indicated by their physician.

Side Effects:

Allergic reaction has been noted in patients allergic to Meclizine. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include hives, other forms of dermatitis (including eczema), rash and difficulty breathing. If these symptoms are noted, patients should contact their physician immediately.

Meclizine has been known to impair thinking and reaction times and should not be taken while driving or operating heavy machinery if adverse reaction occurs. It also should not be taken with alcohol, cold or allergy medication, narcotic pain medication, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, seizure medication or anti-depressant/anti-anxiety drugs.

Meclizine should not be used with patients under twelve years of age or those with a known allergy or sensitivity to Meclizine. Patients with asthma or other breathing disorders, glaucoma or an enlarged prostate should talk to their doctor and find an alternative method of treatment. To date, the drug is not expected to be harmful to a fetus; however, women who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant should alert their doctor prior to use.

Research is unclear as to whether Meclizine is able to pass into breast milk. Because Meclizine is known to be harmful to children under the age of twelve, women who are breastfeeding should alert their pediatrician or OB/GYN prior to use.
